Misty Reed
Educational Diagnostician/ Assistant Professor
Orleans Parish Public Schools
Hello. I am Misty. I graduated from Wossman High School as the Valedictorian and also at an extremely young age. Let's just say when I was graduating from college, people I was supposed to graduate with were graduating high school. I attended Prairie View A&M University on an academic and athletic scholarship. There, I earned a B.S. in Biology/Biochemistry and won a SWAC Championship in softball my first year with a team of freshmen. I later joined the Bowling team as well just because. In Fall 2002, I was selected to be a member of the BEST sorority (Delta Sigma Theta-Eta Beta Chapter). I then attended Southern University-Baton Rouge and earned an M.S. in Biochemical Sciences and a Ph.D. in Science and Mathematics Education. During my educational career, I also earned an M.S. in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University.
Currently, I am a full-time student like yourself, and will soon graduate with an M.Ed. with a Mild/Moderate Concentration 6-12, as well as an Educational Diagnostician Concentration from Southeastern Louisiana University. I will enroll in an Accelerated Nursing program and eventually matriculate to become a Doctor of Advance Practice Nursing with a focus in Cosmestics, Infectious Disease, and Oncology.
I began my career in education as a grades 5-12 Math and Science teacher at a newly opened alternative school that I had a hand in starting. I then worked as a nuclear scientist for the United States Department of Energy dealing with the atomic bomb. Through all of my experience in education, I can say that working with special education students is absolutely my favorite. I have had an IEP all of my life (Gifted) but did not know that classified me as a special education student until I became certified in Special Education. I have the exceptionality of Autism-Asperger's Disorder and Savant Syndrome. Currently, I am the youngest person to receive a Ph.D. in the state of Louisiana. I work as an Educational Diagnostician for the Orleans Parish School Board. When I returned to education, I was a Health & PE Teacher/Adaptive PE Teacher. I completed an Alternative Certification Program and by the end of that I was certified in Biology (6-12) and SPED M/M (6-12). Throughout my career, I have also obtained the following certifications: Reading Specialist (1-12), Adapted PE, SPED M/M (4-8), Middle School Mathematics (4-8), Middle School Science (4-8), Mentor Teacher, Master Teacher, Algebra I, Educational Diagnostician, Child Search Coordinator, Child Welfare Supervisor, and Educational Leader.
I will soon add the Ed Technology Facilitator certification to my battery. I have taught mostly at the high school level where I also coached football, boys’ basketball, and softball.d is a Commissioner for the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission.
